Bringing a new life into the world is one of the most profound experiences a person can have, but it can also feel overwhelming. A little preparation can make a big difference.

Whether you’re a first-time parent or welcoming another child into your family, birthing classes can be a powerful tool to help you feel informed, empowered, and ready for the road ahead. Keep reading to learn more.

What Are Birthing Classes?

Birthing classes, sometimes called birth ready classes, are programs that prepare expecting parents for labor and delivery. These classes cover a wide range of topics, such as:

  • Understanding the stages of labor
  • Preparing a birth plan
  • Pain management techniques
  • Breathing exercises
  • Pushing positions
  • What to expect during a c-section

Birthing classes create a space where parents can ask questions, voice concerns, and connect with others who are on the same journey. The knowledge and confidence gained in these sessions can make a meaningful difference in how parents experience labor and delivery.

When to Take Birthing Classes

Ideally, you should plan to start a birthing class series during your third trimester, somewhere between weeks 28 and 32 of pregnancy. This timing ensures that the material is fresh in your mind when labor begins, while still giving you enough time to complete the course before your due date arrives. However, there’s no set time. You can start whenever feels right to you.

Here are a few general guidelines to help you plan:

  • First-time parents are encouraged to start earlier, as there is more new information to absorb.
  • Parents who have given birth before may benefit from a refresher course, especially if it’s been several years or if circumstances have changed (such as planning a VBAC — vaginal birth after cesarean).
  • Women experiencing high-risk pregnancies may want earlier education and closer coordination with a healthcare provider.

Are Birthing Classes Covered by Insurance?

One of the most common questions expecting parents have is whether birthing classes are covered by their health insurance. The answer is: it depends.

Some insurance plans do cover childbirth education, particularly when classes are offered through a hospital or certified healthcare provider. However, coverage varies widely depending on your specific plan, provider, and whether the class is considered medically necessary.

To find out what your insurance covers, it’s a good idea to:

  • Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask specifically about “childbirth education” or “prenatal education” benefits.
  • Ask your OB-GYN, midwife, or healthcare provider if they offer in-network classes or can provide a referral.
  • Check whether classes must be taken through a hospital or specific provider to qualify for coverage.

If you currently do not have insurance or your plan doesn’t cover birthing classes, contact Pathways PRC. We offer birth ready classes completely free of charge. We believe that cost should never be a barrier to a safe, informed, and supported birth experience. No insurance, no referral, no paperwork, just compassionate, practical education.

Are Birthing Classes Necessary?

The honest answer is: no, birthing classes are not medically required. Millions of parents have given birth without ever attending a formal class. The human body is remarkably capable, and your medical team will be there to guide and support you throughout the process.

That said, there is a meaningful difference between going through labor and feeling truly prepared for it. A study found that parents who attend childbirth education classes reported less fear and greater satisfaction with their birth experience.[1] Another study found that childbirth education can be associated with lower rates of intervention (such as inductions) and increased success with breastfeeding.[2]

Beyond the clinical benefits, there’s an emotional dimension that shouldn’t be overlooked. Labor can be intense, unpredictable, and sometimes overwhelming, even when everything goes smoothly. Knowing what to expect, having a toolkit of coping techniques, and feeling genuinely informed can transform fear into confidence.

In short, birthing classes may not be necessary, but they are incredibly valuable. They are an investment in your peace of mind, your birth experience, and your transition into parenthood.
